about
"A mountainous salient that takes the place of a wall
Where fortifications are barring the hill
A city bathed by a river deemed impassable
Where young soldiers were forced to drill."
__________
This song relates the feeling of despair to the history of the Battle of Verdun. It talks about the soldiers rotation system established by the General Pétain and the fear to go back to the front knowing the potentially fatal outcome.
"A mountainous salient that takes the place of a wall
Where fortifications are barring the hill
A city bathed by a river deemed impassable
Where young soldiers were forced to drill."
This verse depicts the city of Verdun, a defensive salient mountain around the Meuse, a difficult river to cross.
The city was already a garrison for young soldiers long before the war.
lyrics
A mountainous salient that takes the place of a wall
Where fortifications are barring the hill
A city bathed by a river deemed impassable
Where young soldier were forced to drill
Europe collapses around an Austrian she has never seen
My life is lost around the bell that sound the knell
The bullets fuse, the helmets growl and we die in between
Climbing that hill, the name of Douaumont doesn't ring a bell
But as I walk up
My heart has speed up
The noise has grown up
The reaper
My fire
Fix your bayonet
Reach out the subject
Protect the realm with the strengh of your head
Explosives has been set
Exhausted but no defect
Protect the trench, "Arise the dead"
Arise the dead
Come to me, I can see
You came to me, my empress
Come to me, Now I can flee
You came to me, lady of death
Emotionnal impress
Now I can't see, now I can't flee
Now I'll doom my life for you
Exhaustion we knew
The reaper
My fire
Fix your bayonet
Reach out the subject
Protect the realm with the strengh of your head
Explosives has been set
Exhausted but no defect
Protect the trench, "Arise the dead"
What doesn't kill you
Makes you wish you were dead
What doesn't destroy you
Leaves you broken instead
Dead, dead, dead
