Cette chanson met en relation le sentiment du désespoir et celui de l'histoire de la bataille de Verdun.
On y parle du système de roulement des soldats instauré par le général Pétain et de la difficulté à remonter au front connaissant l'issue potentiellement fatale.

Un saillant montagneux qui tient la place d'un mur
Où les fortifications barrent la colline
Une ville baignée par une rivière jugée impraticable
Où de jeunes soldats furent forcés à l'éducation militaire.

Toute cette strophe raconte la ville de Verdun, saillant montagneux défensif autour de la Meuse, difficile à franchir. La ville était d'ailleurs déjà une garnison pour jeunes soldats bien avant la guerre.

This song relates the feeling of despair to the history of the Battle of Verdun. It talks about the soldiers rotation system established by the General Pétain and the fear to go back to the front knowing the potentially fatal outcome.

This verse depicts the city of Verdun, a defensive salient mountain around the Meuse, a difficult river to cross.
The city was already a garrison for young soldiers long before the war.
